Article about the elevator industry in Japan

After Finland, I wrote an article about the elevator industry in Japan. I was amazed that the Japanese keep detailed statistics on installed elevators: number of floors, type of drive, age of the elevator. I found all this information in the public domain.
The elevator industry in Japan is an oligopolistic market with several leading companies. In 2020, about 880,000 elevators were installed in Japan. More than 90% of the maintenance market is occupied by the five largest manufacturers Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi, Toshiba, Japan Otis Elevator, Fujitec and their subsidiaries.
At the same time, there are about a hundred independent service companies in Japan (not part of the elevator equipment manufacturer group) that service elevators of all manufacturers. The market share of such service companies is only a few percent! The main reason for this is that even if the building owner, who is the owner of the elevator, requests a quotation from an independent elevator service provider, he may well be refused due to the lack of information on the measures to maintain the elevator in good condition (an example is the accident with the Schindler elevator in 2006). Thus, the principle of competition in the elevator service market is not observed in Japan. Interestingly, manufacturers also act as independent companies in relation to each other. For example, Mitsubishi Electric services not only its own elevators, but also elevators from other manufacturers.
